There’s no denying, I love black. Some might say it’s outrageously boring – heck, it’s not even a real colour – but I think it’s outrageously fabulous, and I’d be happy to dress in black for the rest of my days if I had to. Truth be told, an all black everything outfit can indeed look a little dull, but if you follow a few simple pointers, you’ll be able to pull off an interesting and even eye-catching all black outfit in no time.
Remember my pointers on how to white out? Well the principle is mostly the same. The devil lies in the details, and in this case the details are textures and shapes. Mix those up and you’ll create the perfect black outfit. And how easy is it to mix textures? Just think about all the materials at your disposal: cotton, knits, cashmere, leather, patent leather, suede, lace, silk, faux fur, wool, crochet, neoprene, denim, sequins, studs, feathers, beads…and now think about all the possible combinations….the list is basically endless.
The same goes for shapes. There are A-line skirts, pencil skirts, mini skirts, maxi skirts, midi skirts, pleated skirts, peg trousers, cigarette trousers, straight trousers, wide trousers, culottes, boxy tops, crop tops, wide tops, tight tops…and so on and so on. Mix those shapes up and all eyes will be on you.
If you want to keep it safe though, and combine flat materials like cotton and denim, try to work in a third, more tactile fabric or use a statement accessory to create a focus point…bags, shoes, necklaces, the choice is all yours.
Happy mixing 🙂
