Fierce in Black and White

Fierce in Black and WhiteI don’t know about you, but for me, fashion is not only about parading the latest trends and creating eye-catching compositions. First and foremost, it’s about feeling save, happy and strong. “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life” – literally and metaphorically – and it lets us express our feelings and emotions without having to say a single word.

Fierce in Black and White Fierce in Black and White Not every outfit I wear is full of hidden meaning or emotions for others to decipher – I wish my thought process was that profound, but let’s face it, it’s really not, and just because I love black, doesn’t mean I’m clinically depressed – but every outfit I wear does indeed make me feel a certain way, and allows me to explore different facets of my personality, which I can then portray to others.

Fierce in Black and White Fierce in Black and White While girly skater dresses make me feel all young and vulnerable, loads of layers have exactly the opposite effect. They act like a shield of some sorts. The more layers I wear the cooler and less vulnerable I feel. And then there is black…my safe haven. When I wear black I can conquer the world. Nothing makes me feel stronger and more indestructible than an effective all black look; preferably with loads of figure-hugging (faux) leather. Yes, that’s a look I feel fabulous in.

Fierce in Black and White Throw in a flowing white layer and I instantly feel sweeter, more approachable, but still strong and sexy. Black and white; it’s a classic combination that works, and somehow manages to express a much more positive outlook on life than an all black look. It’s funny how the only non-colours evoke the strongest emotions in people. Black is dark and mysterious, while white is pure and innocent. It must be their subtlety that makes them so strong. Mix them up and you move from one fabulous extreme to the other – it truly is a colour game you cannot lose.

“A colour game you cant lose” …profound! Every time I read your sentiments it really connects with me.
Black is truly my safe heaven too. Bold colours say too much so I always try to add a little black or neutral tone for a more subtle statement, & for my own aesthetic sanity. You look like a relaxed cool cat – especially in those sunnies! xo

Unlike some, I consider black and white to be colours…and I love them just as much as other colours. I find it absolutely fascinating how they invoke so many connotations…and how there seems to be something almost mythical about them.

Combined together, they are infinitely elegant because one seems to support the other…invoking Ying and Yang symbolism to my mind. Even in a casual outfit, they create sophistication. Speaking of which, this look to me seems very sophisticated in its simplicity. Cropped black sweater paired with a white shirt…how classical and how perfect! Ripped jeans and boots jazzing things up a little.

Maybe it is not so much about the clothes (or colours) we wear but why we wear them. If we wear something because we think we should, then it will never work…trying to impress somebody never creates an aura that feeling good about ourselves does. No way, No how. In that sense, whatever works for us…is and should be our personal definition of fashion.

Thanks for the heartfelt comment. I really appreciate that you always take the time to thoroughly read through my posts and share your opinions and experiences.

I’m totally with you Ivana! Although trying to impress with a look you love does indeed work. I guess it’s all about attitude, and feeling happy and comfortable in your own skin 🙂 xx

  • AF
