I don’t know about you, but for me, fashion is not only about parading the latest trends and creating eye-catching compositions. First and foremost, it’s about feeling save, happy and strong. “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life” – literally and metaphorically – and it lets us express our feelings and emotions without having to say a single word.
Not every outfit I wear is full of hidden meaning or emotions for others to decipher – I wish my thought process was that profound, but let’s face it, it’s really not, and just because I love black, doesn’t mean I’m clinically depressed – but every outfit I wear does indeed make me feel a certain way, and allows me to explore different facets of my personality, which I can then portray to others.
While girly skater dresses make me feel all young and vulnerable, loads of layers have exactly the opposite effect. They act like a shield of some sorts. The more layers I wear the cooler and less vulnerable I feel. And then there is black…my safe haven. When I wear black I can conquer the world. Nothing makes me feel stronger and more indestructible than an effective all black look; preferably with loads of figure-hugging (faux) leather. Yes, that’s a look I feel fabulous in.
Throw in a flowing white layer and I instantly feel sweeter, more approachable, but still strong and sexy. Black and white; it’s a classic combination that works, and somehow manages to express a much more positive outlook on life than an all black look. It’s funny how the only non-colours evoke the strongest emotions in people. Black is dark and mysterious, while white is pure and innocent. It must be their subtlety that makes them so strong. Mix them up and you move from one fabulous extreme to the other – it truly is a colour game you cannot lose.
