Battle Of The Brows

Battle Of The BrowsTwo things I’ve learned from the Battle Of The Brows: 1. I must have had some awful looking eyebrows in the past. Did I know nothing about colour matching brow products to my eyebrows? 2. I’m just generally awful at filling in my eyebrows. Two facts I was completely unaware of until I looked at the pictures for this blog post…oops!

Anyways, I’ve always been obsessed with my eyebrows. They’re naturally big and and a little bushy so I started plucking them rather early. I think when I was about 11 or 12 years old I plucked them into proper non-existence – they looked like inverted U’s and were just as thin. A few years later, at age 14/15, I fortunately let them grow out a little, but made the huge mistake of making them really short at both ends, which again, wasn’t a great look at all. Over the next few years I finally got them into a shape I was pretty happy with…until recently that is. With the rise of the Cara brow and just general appreciation of big, bushy brows I finally felt confident enough to go au naturel and let my own eyebrows run grow wild. I stopped plucking them into shape around Christmas time, and now only remove strays when needed. Not only do I luuurve having a bit more of a statement brow, but considering my brows grow like weed, they’ve also become so much more low maintenance.

Battle Of The BrowsBut enough with the ramblings, let’s move on to the actual point of this blog post: a comparison of all the brow products I own and have used in the past in chronological order.

Battle Of The Brows1. Rimmel Professional Eyebrow Pencil ‘001 Dark Brown’. Dark Brown? Yeah right. It’s more like dark orange. I can’t believe I was actually using it. Why did nobody tell me how awful the colour match was? In hindsight, I feel absolutely mortified. It doesn’t even come out that orange when swatched on the’s a mystery really. Otherwise it applies quite nicely, I’m just a little too heavy handed to make it look even.

Battle Of The Brows2. Benefit Brow Zings ‘Dark’.You’re supposed to apply a little bit of the wax with the angled brush and then use the powder and the other brush to fill in your brows. I never really used the powder as it clearly is too orange, but now looking at the picture, it seems like the wax wasn’t the best colour match either. The application is a bit of a chore and gets particularly difficult closer to the glabella, but at least it makes my eyebrows look a bit more decent than the Rimmel eyebrow pencil.

Battle Of The Brows3. Hourglass Brow Sculpting Pencil ‘Dark Brunette’. Apart from its steep price tag, this product is the bomb. The grey undertones are a much better match to my almost black eyebrows, the packaging is so lux and sturdy, and the waxy formula applies very nicely. Even though I can still detect a hint of orange, I’m very impressed with the brow pencil and will definitely repurchase it.

Battle Of The Brows4.  Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz ‘Brunette’. I’ve heard great things about this product and instantly liked it despite its flimsy packaging. It’s again a bit too orange for my taste, but I absolutely love the small waxy tip. It allows for a very precise application and doesn’t punish heavy-handedness.

What eyebrow product do you swear buy? I’m always in the market for a new one…
