The Art Of Turning Heads - Fashion Week Edition

As a passionate fashion blogger on a budget attending Fashion Week – whether London Fashion Week or Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Amsterdam (MBFA) – has been a huge dream of mine for many years. I can’t imagine anything more accelerating than immersing myself in the buzz of Fashion Week – new exciting collections, next season’s trends, emerging designers, the beautiful models, the fashion editors, the bloggers, the celebs, the makeup, the music…the list just goes on and on.

The Art of Turning Heads – Fashion Week Edition

While the main focus is usually on the clothes created by the designers to spot next season’s trends, we all know that the real trick lies in dressing to impress off the catwalk. And that’s the moment where even the most adept dressers among us will take a few minutes (read weeks) for a major wardrobe crisis, a real meltdown, a genuine moment of self-doubt over the simple question of what to wear. As if attending a fantastic fashion show by a talented designer alongside the most knowledgeable and stylish fashion industry professionals wasn’t nerve-wrecking enough, there will also be a plethora of genius fashion bloggers to compete with for the attention of all the influencing street style photographers outside the venues. So how DO you stand out from the crowd and make sure that all eyes will be on you, and only you? Read on for four simple steps to the perfect Fashion Week outfit that is guaranteed to turn more than just one head…

1. Make sure you plan your outfit well in advance in order to have plenty of time to come up with a look you’re absolutely happy with. Familiarise yourself with your outfit and observe how it drapes around your body when you move. Does it still look flattering once seated? Have you checked the back? Other people can see you from behind you know. Keep in mind that some outfits are inherently more photogenic than others, even when they all look good in the mirror. Take a few selfies from different angles with and without flash just two make sure that the camera will love you just as much as you love your mirror image.

2. Stay true to your style. Just because you’re attending Fashion Week in July, like I am hoping to, doesn’t mean you have to force your minimalistic, monochrome loving self into girly summer dresses. The most attractive people are those that feel happy and confident in their own skin. If you feel like an imposter, your body language will reflect that and people won’t look at you twice. If you feel great in your own skin and wear an outfit that reflects your personal style and taste perfectly, on the other hand, the people around you will pick up on your positive energy and see you with completely different eyes.

3. “Be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else”. There’s no harm in getting inspired by your favourite fashion bloggers, models or actors, but whatever you do, don’t copy their looks one to one. You don’t want to be remembered as the girl, who wore Chiara Ferragni’s day 1 outfit on day 2. Besides, all eyes will be on the people sporting a fresh new look, not on those that look like an exact copy of somebody else.

4. Keep it simple but interesting. Fashion Week is all about looking effortlessly chic. Less is definitely more in this case. Choose a simple and timeless outfit (or one that already reflects next seasons trends if you feel particularly trendy) and introduce a subtle element of fun to give it a contemporary twist. Nobody wants to be blinded by a random mix of colours and patterns, unless the person in question knows exactly what he or she is doing or is so established in the fashion world that people would start wearing potato bags if he or she was spotted in one. Outfits looking too forced may score you a few glances and pictures, but may also score you a feature in the worst-dressed section of an online publication….not so attractive if you asked me.

Let me illustrate the points I made above with the outfit I’m wearing as an example. When Fashionchick asked all UK fashion bloggers to come up with the perfect summer outfit for MBFWA and explain while all eyes in the city will be on them to win a fabulous trip to Amsterdam and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (alongside many other amazing prizes), the whole outfit started with a vision in my head of my perfect, summer-appropriate Fashion Week look.

My outfit consisting of culottes, as part of the ever so stylish white suit, and a cheeky black crop top incorporates all of my current favs in one simple and timelessly chic outfit. Anybody who has been following my blog for more than a few days knows my love for a monochrome colour palette and a trendy pair of culottes. They are the epitome of effortlessness, look absolutely banging in motion and work great with heels and flats alike. To give my outfit a bit more oomph and inject some colour, I paired it with my gorgeous and surprisingly comfortable Fashionchick heels that create the most elegant arch and a delicate Monica Vinader bracelet.

To tie the whole look together I then threw on a stereotypical pair of sunglasses by Armani, which I bought with a gift card courtesy of House of Fraser, and grabbed my new asymmetric zip clutch from River Island that has more than enough space to hold a phone, a few business cards, and even a cheeky pair of flip-flops if needed. Trust me when I tell you that I took more than just one selfie before my mum and I left the house to shoot the outfit. But I must say, I’m incredibly happy with the result and would love to wear this outfit to MBFWA, if I’m lucky enough to win the #FCfindyourlook competition. May the odds be ever in my favour 😉
